Exercising While Pregnant

In my first blog, I talked about the beginning of my fitness journey - my new fitness lifestyle.  After a five month journey of transforming myself from an overweight body to a Beachbody, I realized something was missing… or rather, something was late. Yep, you guessed it, I was pregnant!  I just about hit the floor in delusion when I found out. The first thing wasn’t, “OMG I’m going to be a mommy!” Oh NO, the first thought was, SHIT! I just lost all that weight! Yes, I was more concerned about myself and all the weight I had just worked so hard to lose. Was I even going to be able to exercise while pregnant? My mind was clouded and overwhelmed. What happened?? I could hear God laughing at me from the heavens above, but it was plain and simple. You got married, you had “relations”, and now here is your baby. How was this happening? How was I going to change? What was I going to have to give up? I really had to contend with finding a positive mindset because everything I could think of was negative.  My body, my independence, my social life, the food I enjoyed, my hair color, even down to the lotion I put on my face. I had to give it all up. My life in general was going to change and not for the good. Oh yea, and what about my marriage? I guess I’ll bring back the marriage weight too, or in this case, the pregnancy weight.

I didn’t know what to do or where to begin. I was pregnant and I freaked out. The first thing I knew was that I had to continue to work out. I had to. Working out was my sanity. My husband just about duct taped me to a chair every time he saw me doing P90X during the pregnancy. He was concerned I was going to hurt the baby. And while I can totally understand a lot of people’s misconception on exercising while you’re pregnant, I just couldn’t give it up completely. After having conversations with my doctor, reading blogs, magazines, books, and medical journals, I found out that exercising was the best thing I could keep doing for the baby. Woohoo! There was actually one thing I didn’t have to give up! The benefits of exercising while pregnant actually help a mother-to-be gain weight healthily and gradually. Working out during pregnancy keeps your muscles strong and flexible while your body is changing as the baby grows and also helps with labor. That’s certainly a plus all in itself!  Also, I read that exercising while pregnant will help your body bounce back after the baby is born. That was the main reason I didn’t want to stop working out, I needed to feel like all that work and time preparing was going to pay off.  I knew I had to take it down a notch, but since I was working out with these intense programs before getting pregnant, there was no reason to stop now. My doctor even recommended I continue to do so all the way up until the baby was here… or as much as I could comfortably do so. I got all kinds of comments during my pregnancy while working out. “Good for you!” “Be careful.” “Should you be doing that?” “You look great!” “Your baby is going to have AB Ripper X Abs!”  (Referring to one of my P90X workout routines).  So I did just that. I continued to work out. I continued to plug every weak and fearful thought into jumping around to INSANITY like a mad pregnant woman! It was quite a sight! But it felt so good!

I worked out to a variety of Beachbody programs during my pregnancy; P90X, INSANITY, Turbo Fire, and Brazil Butt Lift, just to name a few.  If I was going to bounce back, I had to make sure my body was flexible and strong in every way. By eight months, it was June and I had gained 25 lbs. June, as most of you know that live in Texas and the South, was one of the hottest summers on record, and that meant swelling! My poor feet and ankles! I was starting to get exhausted, and started experiencing pain in the right side of my lower back. I had sciatic nerve pain that would shoot down the back of my right leg. But just because I couldn’t do kick boxing with Turbo Fire anymore, or lift weights with P90X, didn’t mean I was going to give up the few several weeks I had left.  I stopped the intense programs and continued doing low intense exercises, like walking, swimming, and stretching.  My body was awkwardly large, but mostly all stomach. I had anywhere from 6-8 weeks left to go, and at the end of your pregnancy you can gain anywhere from 1-2 pounds a week. This was when I really started to panic because I was supposed to be eating the most I could possibly eat for the baby’s weight gain and brain development. That meant I could potentially gain anywhere from 6-16 additional pounds, if not more! I stayed positive and focused.  I did what I could, when I could, and ate a lot of protein while dropping the carbs. This was hard because during my entire pregnancy, I craved muffins! Leave it to my favorite coffee bar, LoneStar Coffee, to make fresh homemade muffins every day. Needless to say, I knew I was going to gain some weight the last several weeks.

By the end of my pregnancy, I was tired, cranky, swollen, and ready to get this thing out of me. I had gained a total of 36 lbs.! I began my pregnancy at 120 lbs. and was now 156 lbs. Most of my weight was in my booty and around my belly. Great! Those are the hardest places for me to lose weight. I knew there was going to be some work to do.

The last two weeks of my pregnancy, I put a plan together. I talked with my husband and poured out my heart. I wanted more out of my fitness journey besides getting back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I mean, I want that too, but I want it to be more than that. I want more out of my Beachbody Coaching business. I want to share my story again. From skinny bitch to swollen pregnant girl, to what kind of mom? That’s the ultimate question here. How is my body going to transform me again, and who am I going to be? So he helped me come up with a game plan. He helped me build out all of my social media sites to start sharing my journey to the world, and all I had to do was get an action plan together and talk about it. Oh yea, one minor detail – I have to get results!

I ordered ChaLEAN Extreme from Beachbody. ChaLEAN Extreme is a series of workout programs that focuses on 90 days of strength training. It is 15 different workouts via DVD that you use to workout in the comfort of your own home. I started broadcasting on my social media sites that I was determined to get at it right away and found a few other people that wanted to join along (even better). Like I always say, when starting a new weight loss journey or any fitness goal, get accountability. Find someone or a group of people to keep you focused and motivated.  We decided to create a challenge. A ChaLEAN Extreme Challenge! Starting August 1st – October 31st – 90 days to commit. Together as a group we would order the DVDs from Beachbody and would workout to the program and follow the schedule provided, all in the comfort of our own homes.  We would also keep each other accountable by checking in on Facebook on a daily and weekly basis, posting our successes and struggles to a private wall. So I have my workouts, I have my accountable partners, and now it was just a waiting game.
